UnboundID™ Upgrades Directory Server Platform and LDAP Software Development Toolkit

New Versions Provide Improved Identity Management Support for High-Volume Applications

Portland, OregonSeptember 21, 2009 — Today at the LDAPCon 2009 Conference, UnboundID Corp., a developer of identity management software for Internet-driven, consumer-facing architectures, announced the availability of version 2.1 of the UnboundID™ Directory Server and version 1.1 of the UnboundID LDAP SDK for Java. The new products are designed to provide improved support for the identity management demands of today’s multi-channel applications, such as texting and smart phone applications, which serve users across an expanding number of digital and wireless networks.

"Gluu was challenged to architect a cloud based directory service to hold multiple identities for every person on Earth. Previously available technologies simply were not up to the task," said Michael Schwartz, Founder of Gluu, a clearinghouse for identity information. "In conjunction with directory virtualization technology, the UnboundID proxy server, directory server and client SDK have enabled Gluu to build a next generation directory service that scales from a persistence, provisioning, and security perspective."

The UnboundID Directory Server is based on a new identity management platform designed to process billions of entries and transactions to support today’s high-volume consumer and business applications. This latest version unveiled today provides several important enhancements, including:

  • Large Attribute Support – improves the performance of identity management deployments that process large and complex identity attributes, such as "spoken name" in voicemail systems. Unlike other directories, the UnboundID platform gives on-demand access to such attributes so that ongoing pressure to the system is eliminated and performance is improved.
  • Improved Auditing – extends the UnboundID logging mechanism to include new repositories, such as RDBMS systems, which, coupled with fine-grained log filtering, enables administrators to build searchable logs. As result, users can easily create audit trails of those making access changes to sensitive data.

"After seeing directory servers evolve and being used over a long period of time, several new directory servers, such as the UnboundID Directory Server were written in the last few years from the ground up. Having the luxury to start writing a directory server nowadays from scratch, means that the result can be a significant leap ahead, and achieve goals that could not be reached with existing directory server software," noted Felix Gaehtgens, senior analyst at Kuppinger Cole.

The new version of the UnboundID LDAP SDK for Java – the only LDAP SDK on the market currently being supported and updated – is designed to make identity management-dependent applications faster to develop and easier to maintain. It can also be used for coding and ongoing maintenance of applications coded with other LDAP SDKs, such as JNDI and the Mozilla SDK. Key enhancements include:

  • Application Migration Support – includes new facilities that automate the migration of applications developed using the JNDI and Mozilla Directory LDAP SDKs to the UnboundID architecture. As a result, developers can continue to support their applications with an updated and maintained LDAP SDK.
  • Licensing – with support for the LGPL license, in addition to a free "right-to-use" license or GPLv2, developers have more rights to embed and redistribute the technology they develop using the SDK.

"Today’s mobile environments and applications demand identity management platforms and tools that can perform at unprecedented levels of scale, availability and complexity, which legacy platforms just can’t do," said Steve Shoaff, co-founder and CEO of UnboundID. "The latest versions of our offerings are specifically designed to make sure today’s identity management architectures can meet emerging needs."
